What is a Literature Circle?

A Literature Circle is a jigsaw approach to discussing a piece of literature. In a Literature Circle, each member of the circle has a specific role/way of looking at the assigned piece of text.
Each student must prepare her role (according to the role sheet I give you) the night before that circle will take place. Use your role sheet to record the information you will share with and questions you will pose to your other group members. Each day of our literature circles, your role will change.
What you need to Do

  • Each day when you come into class, get into your assigned literature circle group
  • Before you begin discussion, respond to the starting point question and write down the homework and the word of the day
  • (discussion directors-you may choose to use the starting point as a way to enter into your discussion for the day)
    How you will be graded

We will be using three days to complete our literature circles this time. Each day, you will earn points for

  • preparation (15)
  • participation (15)
  • Attendance (10)

Our five days of literature circles will be worth a maximum of 100 points for each of you.
