THE CONVERGENCE
TOWARD EMPIRE

MAJOR TRADE ROUTES, A.D.200

-By A.D. 200, long-distance trade was an important part of the economies of many societies. This map shows how land and sea trade connected peoples over thousands of miles. The movement of peoples, goods, animals, and plants profoundly affected the development of empires. You will need to refer to Chapter 8 of The Global Past to complete some of the exercises.

The Trade Context
To understand the conditions long-distance land traders overcame, complete the following exercises.

1. Calculate the east-west length of the markets in the overland trade network by using the map scale. Use Loyang as the eastern terminus and the Atlantic coast of Spain as the western end of the routes. Write your answer on the map next to the scale key.

2. Refer to the geographic features map on pp. 4-5 and label Map 8.5 on p. 24 with the mountains, deserts, and other geographic features along the trade routes shown on the map.

3. Referring to the various maps in Chapter 8 of The Global Past, label Map 8.5 with the states and peoples involved in the trade network in A.D. 200.
