300 BC Jenne-Jeno is a thriving commercial town
   
Ghana era
c.750 AD Soninke found ancient Ghana and gain power in the region by making iron weapons. Ancient
Ghana emerges as a major trading state in the Sudan, controlling both the salt and the gold trades.
   
Ghana era  
900S-1000s Ghana reaches it's zenith, impressing visitors with the grandeur of its cities
1070 Almoravids enter Ghana from North Africa.
   
Mali era  
1230-40 Sundiata Keita defeats Sumanguru and the city of Sosso. He establishes the Mali Mandinka Empire
1307-37 Kankan (Mansa) Musa is emperor: apogee of Mali; expansion to the ocean-, Mansa Musa brings
experts from Cairo to create Muslim schools and law courts and to introduce new building
techniques. He makes a pilgrimage to Mecca (1324-5)
c. 1350 The geographer In Battuta visits Mali.
1400 Dissatisfied with Mali's weak ruler, Gao declares its independence. Mali begins to decline as the
Songhay empire emerges.
   
Songhay era  
1465 Sonni Ali, a great general and emperor of Songay, gains contol of the middle Niger region.
Develops new farming methods and begins a professional navy
1493-1528 Askia Muhammad governs Songhay, instituting Muslim practices and modernizing the government
and military; Timbuktu and Jenne prosper as centers of learning and trade.
1510 Leo Africanus visits western Sudan
1549-83 Reign of Askya Daoud; apogee of Songay
1591 Moroccan invasion; defeat of Songay at Tondibi. Decline into anarchy
