ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The program includes eight-full day institutes on Saturdays throughout the school year. Each session highlights one era, region or issue, relating to the theme of the year's program. All institutes are designed to conform to New York State Regents requirements for high school graduation, as well as the new promotional standards and the New York City and New York State Learning and Performance Standards.

Sessions are scheduled from 8:30AM - 3:00PM with breakfast and lunch provided by the American Forum. A typical day includes:

  • Discussion or panel presentation on the theme of the day
  • Film or visual arts presentation
  • Small group discussion
  • Classroom application sessions

Consultants with area expertise work closely with the project director to plan and implement the programs. Distinguished area scholars present the morning workshops. Staff developers work with teachers to develop teaching materials for use in the classroom.

Materials: Every teacher who attends receives a carefully selected packet of instructional materials and classroom resources. These packets contain books, pamphlets, readings, slides and maps.
