LESSON1 : JAPANESE GEOGRAPHY

AIM: How does geography effect the development of Japan?

IMPLEMENATION:
1. Have students make a list of things/items that they know about Japan or images of Japan in which they collect as their homework. Then students make a conclusion based on these observations and brainstorm on Japan.

2. Their conclusion might include some of the following:

a. large population
b. small houses
c. busy streets
d. sea food
e. student uniforms
f. study hard
g. expensive
h. lots of skyscrapers
i. small items like pencil cases
j. everyone has a Toyota car

3. Questions:

a. Are these true images of Japan today?
b. If they are, then what are the reasons of these images of Japan that you come up with?
c. To what extent do these images have something to do with the geography of Japan?

4. Show photos and slides of the Japan trip, and some video images of Japan, restaurant menu, small combination tools (25 minutes).

5. Have the students check their list of conclusions about Japan based on the information of these materials and why they are right or wrong.

6. Study the map of Japan.

7. Geography has effected the development of Japan in the following ways?

a. surrounded by water ' sea food
b. 80% of land covered by mountains ' limited space for living, streets, earth quick, hot springs, small items like cars, houses, furniture… etc
c. beauty of the Japanese islands ' Shinto, love of nature
d. natural disaster ' not so many high buildings, but flat and low buildings

SUMMARY:

1. What did we learn of Japan today?
2. How do these images of Japan prove whether or not our images of Japan are right or wrong?
3. How largely is geography of Japan responsible for what Japan is today?
