PURSUIT OF CHANGE: PRESERVATION OF CULTURAL VALUES
LESSON 1:
MARRIAGE CEREMONIES

AIM:
How has tradition mixed with popular culture? How does a wedding ceremony sometimes highlight and emphasize traditional culture?

SWBAT:
Using the ceremony of marriage, students will compare several cultures and determine how, even in the pursuit of change, some societies continue to preserve their cultural values. They will compare and contrast several world cultures, looking for similarities and differences. They will be able to list the origins of some cultural practices.

DO NOW:
From previous night's homework assignment: ask students to describe weddings in their families. Where do they think some of the practices come from?

MATERIALS:
Pictures : African Wedding , Arab Wedding , Chinese Wedding Chair , Chinese Wedding , Indian Wedding 1 , Indian Wedding 2 , Japanese Wedding 1 , Japanese Wedding 2 , Mass Wedding , Wedding Traditional , Wedding Unkown 1 , Wedding Unkown 2 , Wedding Unkown 3 , Wedding Unkown 4 , Students Experiencing the Project
Handouts : Handout1 , Handout2 , Handout3

MOTIVATION:
Show pictures of a recent wedding in Japan and ask the students to identify what the participants are wearing (use a transparency). Do the students see a blend of cultures? Why? Present the picture showing brides and grooms all looking the same. DISCUSS.

PROCEDURE:
Divide the class into four (4) to six (6) groups
Provide a picture and a description of a marriage ceremony for each group.
Give each group the following set of questions.

Students are to examine the picture and report on the following:

1. What is worn in terms of clothing or jewelry? Why? Can you trace the origin or reason why?

2. How do the clothing, jewelry, body art, etc., relate to the culture?

3. What is similar to and different from what is known as the "American" wedding?

4. What ceremonies take place before the wedding? What ceremonies take place during and after the wedding? Why?

Create an outline on the board for each wedding ceremony examined.

SUMMARY:
How have each of the examined cultures blended with other cultural practices?

APPLICATION:
From the marriages listed, compile a list of similarities and differences. Discuss.

HOMEWORK:
Research further on other aspects in society that show how a group tends to keep
tradition. E.g.: birth, choice of job, desire for an education, role of religion, funeral practices, etc.
