LESSON 1:
JAPANESE AND AMERICAN SCHOOLS

AIM: What are the differences and similarities between Japanese and American schools?

DO NOW:
Have the students make a list of the things that they have heard about Japanese schools.

ACTIVITY 1:
1. Go over the list that the students made. Have one student write the items on the board.

2. Ask the following questions:
a. Which items are similar to American schools?
b. Which items are different to American schools?
c. Which of these differences do you feel would be good for us to adopt into American schools? Why?
d. Which of these differences do you feel would not be good for us to integrate into American schools? Why?

3. Place a "D" next to the different items and a "S" next to the similar items.

ACTIVITY 2:
1. Examine the photographs provided.

2. Ask the following questions:
a. What seems different than in an American school?
b. What seems the same as an American school?
c. What questions do you have about the picture, if any?

3. Review the answers with students.

CONCLUSION:
How different do you now perceive Japanese schools from our own?
