My Visit in Wako International High School

Sarah Marie Hassan
Baldwin Senior High School
Long Island, New York

I can't even begin to describe the amazing and wonderful experience I had at Wako International High School and all of Tokyo, Japan.

From the first day I stepped into the busy and noisy homeroom of 2-5, I knew that this was going to be a trip I would never forget. The greetings of giggles and hellos were warm and inviting. Everyone was so happy and eager to talk to me, and my travel partners, that the sea of smiling faces seemed endless. I already felt a sense of belonging, even though I was the only one not in sneakers and a navy blue uniform. For the next four days, I would learn things about another culture and see that Japan is not so different from my home. It was scary, interesting, and exciting all at one time, and I did not have any time to miss my home in New York, I was having too much fun!

My host student Maho, made me feel welcome and wanted, and went out of her way to make sure I was comfortable and having fun, something that was not hard to be around her. She proved to be the best host student to an American girl, and I now have one more lifelong friend. Everyone at Wako is thoughtful and caring, and the waves and giggles you get in the hallway prove that. No matter who you are, you will have fun and make friends at Wako, because no one is afraid to talk to you or treats you unkindly because you are from another country and you are their guest. I have seen the nicest acts of human kindness here at Wako and in Japan, and I urge everyone to come to this beautiful country if they are from abroad.

Not everything they teach you in school in your home country is correct, and the only way to prove that is to see it for yourself.
