Global Connections for Elementary Students

Place Detecting...How Many?

It is difficult at times to get students interested in global studies. They often fail to either understand or appreciate how interconnected we all are with the remainder of the earth's inhabitants. One technique to help overcome this provincialism is to do the following:

  • Using either a daily newspaper, a Sunday edition of a national newspaper, or a weekly news magazine, have students become "place detectives" and find all of the places mentioned the source(s) they are using. Don't forget to check the ads!
  • Their lists can be displayed and other students can be asked to find each of them on a globe or world map. The more remote or unusual the place found, the better. As long as they actually exist! To assure honesty, students might also be asked to include the correct latitude and longitude of each location on their lists.
