All students must learn to express themselves in writing. Often, global studies lessons neglect this critical skill. One way to creatively engage students in both "doing" global studies and "doing"creative writing, is the following.
- Have students write a story or essay in which they imagine they are a geographic feature somewhere in the world, e. g., a famous river/lake/river crossing/gulf or sea/mountain pass/river mouth, etc. Have them first describe themselves and then tell what they saw or felt over a period of 100/200/300 years as various peoples traversed or used them. Also, include any lasting effects each of these groups had upon them. Which groups improved, damaged or otherwise changed them the most?
