Map of Libertyville

Student Handout #2, Choosing A Site

Assignments

Part 1 Write a description of the home and neighborhood of your role character, based on information from the table and the map. Use your imagination to describe in as full detail as you can the buildings, shops, streets, people, and atmosphere of the neighborhood.

Part 2 Outline arguments explaining and defending your choice of a site for the low-income housing. Try to be as persuasive as possible; anticipate objections to your point of view, and include counter arguments. Optional: Make a poster, pushing your "role" point of view to its extreme, creating slogans or catch phrases that capture that point of view and will win people over to your side.

Part 3 Present your position and the arguments in support of your position to the class. Listen to the positions of the other neighborhoods and try to reach a consensus on where the housing project should be located.

Part 4 Write a factual article for the general public that reports the situation and defines the site conflict. Try to be as objective as you can in your reporting. See if you can present the facts without revealing your opinion.
