The 1997 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. This organization, located in Putney, Vermont, is headed by Jody Williams, a long-time activist. Even prior to the announcement, the United Nations CyberSchoolBus decided to initiate a project called Schools De-mining Schools. The purpose of this interactive electronic project is to involve young people and educators around the world in the devastating issue of landmines and their destructive powers in developing countries. The American Forum for Global Education, in collaboration with UN officials, developed a series of lesson plans which could be used by teachers in their classrooms. This material, as well as other background pieces and the full explanation of the project, can be found on the CyberSchoolBus. We wish to thank the CyberSchoolBus officials for allowing us to include this material.
