CHINA: CREATING A HAND_MADE HANGING SCROLL WITH A CHINESE LANDSCAPE
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
- Students will be able to identify the three different types
of Chinese scrolls (hanging scroll, hand scroll and the album leaf).

Students will be able to learn about the historical
background of a Chinese scroll, and understand the role and functions of a
scroll in the Chinese society.
- Students will learn about and understand the Chinese artist
and what is his role in china.
- Students will be able to read a scroll and identify the
different elements that make -up a scroll.
- Students will be able to explore the relationship between a
visual image, poetry, and calligraphy in one work of art (Three Perfections)
and the interaction of the creator of each.
- Students will be able to learn and apply the foundations of
Chinese landscape drawing and painting.
- Students will be able to utilize a paintbrush, ink, and
watercolor
- Students will be able to create a hanging scroll with a
Chinese landscape using pen, ink, brush and watercolor.
MATERIALS:
- one large sheet of heavy weight poster paper in any neutral
color.
- two large sheets of construction paper for backing of scroll
- black drawing ink
- Chinese brush or round brush
- colored pencils, water colors
- one piece of ribbon or yam for each scroll

- How do we compare and contrast the use of space in the works
of Renaissance and the Tang dynasty Chinese landscape painters?
- How can we read a hanging scroll?
- How does the Chinese artist draw and paint clouds,
mountains, trees and water in their landscape paintings?

- How can we create the illusion of space in a hanging scroll?
- How can we utilize different values in color to create the
illusion of distance?
ACTIVITIES:
- Teacher will introduce students to works of art by artist who have painted landscapes.
- Teacher will discuss how an artist's interpretation reflects the skill of the artist,
the wishes of the patron and the culture in which it was created.
- Teacher will have students perform a series of painting, drawing, color exercises using
a Chinese paint brush, ink, color pencil, and watercolor; to develop their Chinese
painting skills.
- Students will sketch a Chinese landscape using various materials and techniques.
- Students will create a traditional Chinese landscape painting on a hanging scroll.
