The American Forum for Global Education
(Application deadline: January 10, 2002)
We are very pleased to announce that The China Project will continue
in the year of the Horse, 2002. This coming year we will take two
groups of sixteen students each to The People's Republic of China
on an exciting academic and experiential study program centered
around the theme "China: Changeless and Changing". The
Freeman Foundation generously supports the China Project 2002.
Pre-Departure Seminars:
Pre-departure seminars are designed to provide some essential
historical, cultural and linguistic orientation to prepare participants
for the trip. They are going to be held at the Seamen's Church Institute
from 8:30am to 3:00pm on the following Saturdays: March 23, April
20, May 11, June 8, and June 22, 2002.
Post-trip Institute:
Upon returning from China to America, there will be a post-trip
institute which will provide an opportunity for participants to
share their experiences with each other. The post-trip institute
will be held during August 28 and 29, 2002.
Travel Components:
From June 27 to July 18 (Group I), or from July 18 to August 8 (Group
II), tentatively, we will travel to:
- Beijing: We will stay at Beida (Beijing University) to study
Chinese culture, Mandarin language and to visit sites throughout
the city.
- Luoyang: We will visit the Buddhist caves of Longmen as well
as the Shaolin Temple where Chan Buddhism and Chinese martial
art originated.
- Xi'an: We will visit the ancient capital of Xi'an and its famous
tombs, home of the terracotta warriors.
- Inner Mongolia: We will study nomadic culture by experiencing
horseback riding on the steppes and by sleeping in a yurt.
