1. China Project 2001
The Year 2001 China Project for students has been completed with
a great success. Two groups of a total of 32 students, selected
from high schools in New York City and adjacent areas, spent three
weeks in The People's Republic of China. Prior to the trip, a series
of pre-departure study sessions between March and June were organized
for the selected students to prepare them intellectually for the
trip.
After studying Chinese history, culture and language in classrooms
at Beijing University and visiting historical sites in and around
Beijing, students went on their journey. They traveled to Luoyang,
Xi'an and Hohhot to further explore the Buddhist Caves built during
the 4th and 10th century AD, the Shaolin Buddhist Monastery where
Zen Buddhism was originated, the 2nd c. CE terra-cotta soldiers
at the tomb of the First Emperor of China, and the grassland where
Mongolian people made their homes. Along with discovering history
of China, students came to realize the diversity of Chinese culture,
society and people, and to understand the complexity of China that
is both from traditional and modern.
As a conclusion of their participation in the program, students
have prepared and presented their projects which they are going
to present in their schools in order to increase the awareness of
the world on the other side of the globe among New York high school
students. Some examples of student comments and work can be found
on our web site.
