Alumni Voices:

“In many ways the trip was too wonderful to be imagined... We were immersed in a sea of sensation every day for three weeks. The varieties of smells, the extraordinary friendliness of the people particularly in the smaller cities who found us exotic, the amazing juxtapositions of new capitalistic endeavors like the Pudong, a mini-city for investment in Shanghai and traditional family homes called hutongs in Beijing, where time seems fixed. The enthusiasm for democracy shared by the people we spoke with and the heavy hand of the official government, all made visiting China a treasure-trove for the mind and the spirit. Like the students who went on a similar China trip, we were transformed and transfixed. Our hope is that we can infuse what we learned and what we loved into our lives here at Poly Prep.”

“For three weeks in July, I traveled with a group of twenty teachers to nine cites across China. As a cohort we came together in April to begin the first of several weekend long seminars in Chinese history, philosophy, and culture. Our July trip across China represented the apex of our studies together…. …While we teachers were working to erode cultural walls in China, we were also thinking and talking about the ways in which in we would be working to act upon the barriers to learning, particularly about China, in our schools and among our students. Participation in the China Project provided me with more and better resources, opportunities to share ideas and strategies with colleagues coming from various types of schools, and a first hand view of the land, people, and culture that made, and continues to make, such and enormous contribution to human history. Along with a bit of inspiration and enthusiasm, these are the tools that teachers need to start chipping away.”
